I recently took the geek test on Gizmodo, and scored a 22/50. I noticed at the bottom, if you score a perfect 50, they jokingly diagnose you with Aspergers sydrome. What is this Aspergers you speak of? I was curious too:

"Asperger’s Syndrome is a newly recognized neurological disorder. It shares many of the same characteristics of autism, although people with Asperger’s Syndrome do not have the accompanying disabilities. Those afflicted with this syndrome have difficulty understanding what those around them think and feel. As a result of this, they often behave inappropriately in social situations, or do things that may appear to be unkind or callous.

Individuals with AS can exhibit a variety of characteristics and the disorder can range from mild to severe. Persons with AS show marked deficiencies in social skills, have difficulties with transitions or changes and prefer sameness. They often have obsessive routines and may be preoccupied with a particular subject of interest.

They have a great deal of difficulty reading nonverbal cues (body language) and very often the individual with AS has difficulty determining proper body space. Often overly sensitive to sounds, tastes, smells, and sights, the person with AS may prefer soft clothing, certain foods, and be bothered by sounds or lights no one else seems to hear or see.

It's important to remember that the person with AS perceives the world very differently. Therefore, many behaviors that seem odd or unusual are due to those neurological differences and not the result of intentional rudeness or bad behavior, and most certainly not the result of "improper parenting".
The name "Asperger" comes from Hans Asperger, an Austrian physician who first described the syndrome in 1944."

"In the future, soldiers may be communicating silently with sophisticated "thought helmets." The devices would harness a person´s brain waves and transmit them as radio waves, where they would be translated into words in the headphones of other soldiers."

I could think of a lot better uses for this Thought Helmet then war! Imagine the following:

-Thought-commanding your girlfriend to make you a sandwich without ever having to utter a word from the couch.
-Instead of yelling at your partner and disturbing the neighbors you could just think-fight it out. Not getting your point across? Just think harder!
-I could think-send my computer problems to Derek all the way in Colorado and not have to wait for him to return to his desk to solve my problem!

Ok so that's three... but you get the idea. I think it would be wise for America to refocus this application from war to everyday thought-products and thought-utilities alike. A non-verbal nation, always one step ahead of the game, thinking things before others can speak them.

I thought it was great on all levels. Exactly what you'd expect from the Trailer. My mom even liked it and that's saying a lot. I'm really surprised by it's opening weekend numbers. It seems to me that people aren't giving it a chance because the trailers look "too cartoony" or "like a Flinstones movie." I can see how one would be skeptical, but all personal taste of imagery aside, the story was really good. I came into it not knowing anything about the original cartoon, so I don't know how closely they followed the story line, but I found it much more interesting then expected.

I wish the people who don't know a thing about making movies would get out of the way and let the ones that do finish what they started. Having worked on this film I can honestly say if Norton and Leterrier get their way this film will be much better. But they won't. The people with the money always get what they want. Look at Golden Compass :(

Thank goodness Baha Fresh remembered my side order of sour cream... If you look closely you can see a smidgen of cream in the upper left corner of the plate. So little sour cream, I couldn't even scoop it with my fork onto the burrito. If I wanted any at all I was going to have to lick it off the plate.

Congrats Andy! You guys did an amazing job!

Iron Man! One of the best comic-book movies on the big screen in a while. Really great story and action packed. Rotten Tomatoes is calling the best reviewed film of the year so far, and rightly so! Only a couple small complaints from me...

First off, the technology in his workshop area was a little too over the top, but that's personal taste. Talking computers and machines with personality, aside from Hal 9000, are always a bit much for me. Jessica strongly disagrees.

Secondly, the ending seemed a little lacking, which is all too common in comic book movies. Now-a-days it seems to be the trend to have the hero end up facing off with someone much bigger and badder, leaving him with two options: Lure him over some trap so he ends up destroying himself, or playing the psychologist and talking it out. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it just seems like a little more thought and creativity should go into these endings rather than, "let's just film whatever and figure it out in post."

There are some things we don't tell our children. This can range anywhere from sexuality to outer space. Mine falls right in the middle, somewhere around grammar.

The most grammatically injurious rule of grammar we can give our kids today is "I comes before E, except after C." Let's analyze this in a little more detail, shall we?

Sure we can tell little Timmy the golden rule to help him with his spelling, and all is well as he trots through 5th grade with his Reece's Pieces, receiving stars and smiley faces for his good spelling grades. Little does he know deceit waits just around the corner.

All is well in little Timmy's life, and then one day he's concerned about his weight and gets a new neighbor who's name is Keith. The rule his very own parents taught him is beginning to break down before his very eyes. But not to fear, there's an easy way out of this one. The rule doesn't apply to peoples names. And the rules is extended to:

I before E
except after C,
or when sounded like A
as in "neighbor" and "weigh!"

Now little Timmy is right back on track... until he enrolls in the seventh grade science class. The stars and smiley faces drop as quickly as did the eight reindeer! His conscience moving like a glacier through a species of inefficient agencies, society breaking out into psychotic tenancies. Turning to Budweiser and caffeine to counterfeit the broken law. Was it I before C... or wait what about the E? The God of grammar slowly disappears in an atheistic manner like the Alzheimer's disease. Awake.. one day in a beige jacket on the corner of Beijing, 38 degrees, is that Celsius or Fahrenheit? Hard to tell in a foreign country, North West, neither either, codeine protein. He quickly forfeits the freight of knowledge once bestowed upon him as a child. Now little Timmy is out looking for top dollar geisha's, who's height and weight is heinous compared to a heifer, not even Einstein could solve this kaleidoscope. Leisure activities neither here nor there, finding non-willing obeisance bowing at their door. Seismic shock seizing every side of Santa's sleigh. OK. This is just getting weird.

Movies!

I haven't posted in a while, but so many good movies have come out in "a while" I felt it necessary to voice my appreciation. It's been a long time since I've disagreed with the average rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but two of the following movies have left me flabbergasted (are you paying attention Derek?)

Ratatouille

Last Saturday night my sister and I went to see Ratatouille at the Disney theater in Hollywood, El Capitan. It was gorgeous. Truely inspirational. My favorite Pixar film up until now was Monsters Inc, and it's still very close but I think Ratatouille wins it by a hare, err... rodent (major LOL!). It had some extremly complex things going on as far as animation, and yet such simple shots really stand out as far as there ability to convey subtle emotion with the characters, completely gestural. I think Rotten got it right on with 95 percent. Click the image to watch the first 9 minutes (but I suggest waiting and seeing the whole thing in the theater :)

OOooh I almost forgot to mention, the short film that played before the movie was Pixar's "Lifted." Hilarious...

Eagle Vs Shark

"Eagle Vs Shark" was a random little gem found by my sister watching all the movie trailers on my mac mini, available via Front Row. Very similar to a Napoleon Dynamite type movie, the characters are dorky almost to the point of mental illness. I found it absolutely hilarious, in the saddest of ways. You have to watch it in a group otherwise it's just depressing. I would've easily given this movie a 86 percent. Rotten gave it 57. That being said, I completely agree with the bad reviews given on that page, but I still enjoyed the film thoroughly.

Transformers

Last but definitely not least, Transformers! When I first started saw previews I was pretty stoked. My roommate and I bought tickets online for the first showing at the Bridge theater right down the street. Last week it started off on Rotten with a 86%, but over the next fews days it dropped down to 59, leaving my expectations shattered beyond repair :( So I kind of owe it to the critics. I had such low expectations I was blown away. It's freaking awesome. Obviously you can't go in there expecting a story... I mean it's Transformers, based off an 80's cartoon. Michael Bay did an awesome. Speaking of Michael Bay, he was in the theater with us. Everyone cheered for him as he walked out, and a few of us even got to talk to him. So, 59% on Rotten, I'd easily give it a 90.

July 7, 1982 - ???

1. Yesterday he asked me how to use an ATM machine. He's never used an ATM before? Yeah that's what I thought. So last night he ventured to the bank across the street to have a go at it. All four machines were out of order. LOL!

2. He always locks the front door. Even though I get home about 1 minute after him every single day, he locks the door. I unlock the door and find him taking off his shoes from just entering 30 seconds ago.

3. Sean went to the ATM machine this morning around 8:30. The bank doesn't open until 9. To his surprise the machines were still out of order. Sean has yet to use an ATM machine.

4. The other night I had just dozed off when he came into my room around 2:30 AM to ask me if he could check the router. After that he continued to ask me "are you awake" until I responded. He proceeded to inspect the cable box and router for approx. 30 minutes. I didn't fall asleep again until around 4.

5. He told me to shut the door to the refrigerator quickly so as not to waste energy.

6. Sean prefers to hide his agenda in long-winded, cryptic, conversational questions.

"Earlier today I was thinking about going to the grocery store, I think I'll go in a few minutes. I was wondering if maybe you need some milk or anything, you're more than welcome to come with me although I may be getting a few other things so if milk is the only thing you need you might want to bring your own car... of course it is just across the street so you could walk, I didn't think about that. hee hee hee, hehe, hehehehe, heheh. Well I probably won't leave for another 5 minutes so I'll be in my room if you wanna think it over and get back to me. Oh yeah, do you remember if you parked last? I wasn't sure but if so would it be possible to move your car?"

It's subtle, but if you pay close attention you just might pick out the underlying message.

*for those of you who don't know, most of LA is tandem parking, which means one in front of the other. So whoever gets home first gets parked in.

7. He's a bargain shopper. It doesn't matter what it is, if it's a bargain Sean will buy it. His favorites include the "previously viewed" section of Blockbuster where he purchased such classics as "Battlefield Earth," and "The Covenant." And if he ever wants a little taste of heaven he makes the seven mile journey to the nearest Wal*Mart where he can purchase 59 cent waffles.

8. He asked me to take his picture for his mother. Five minutes later it was his default Myspace picture.

9. He wears a fancy bike helmet.

10. He made me pancakes on Sunday :)

He says the idea of the protest is not to hurt Mobil. It's to send a message that people don't have much to spend in his convenience store -- where he makes his real profit -- when it
costs so much for a fill-up.

The owner wants customers to know he's not getting rich on high gas prices, the oil companies are.

He says he makes the same eight-to-12 cents a gallon on gas selling at $3.49 a gallon as
he did when it was a $1.99.

Pollack says people have been driving by his station in Mequon, Wisconsin and giving him a thumbs-up.

You can't walk through Drive-Throughs!

Emil and Matt came to hang out last night and like every night at one in the morning Emil wanted to get some food. We have a Jack in the Box just down the street and a McDonalds across from it. We walked down and of course they're closed but the drive-through is open. So we decided walk through. I wasn't gonna get anything until I saw the Black-Berry shakes on the menu, which also got Sean interested. We finally get up to the window and there's a few cars behind us. The guys inside the window didn't really know what to say, so they told us to wait for the cars behind us to pay then they'd take our order. So we waited and waited until it was our turn.

"Two blackberry shakes and combo #3 please."

"Sorry we can't do this, company policy."

"Why didn't you tell us that before?"

"Company policy, must be in a car."

"Fine... so we'll walk 20 feet to our apartment and get in a car."

We place our order and what do we hear in return?

"We're out of milkshakes."

Great... so we drove to McDonalds and got strawberry milkshakes. Next time we'll grab a few cardboard boxes and cutout windows to give the illusion we're in a car. Silly drive-through policies.

I saw Happy Feet last night and I gotta say I was pleasently surprised... in a weird way. As an animator, I naturally frown on any mo-cap movie that comes out, so maybe that's why I had low expectations. Plus I was a little peeved that it won "best animated feature" when it wasn't really "animated," it was mo-cap'd. But whatever... I don't really care much for the "look" of the penguins either, but there was some good freakin cg on the seals, elephant seals, whales, etc.

I think the point that really got me interested (spoiler, stop reading if you haven't seen it and still care to) was when the little guy go put in the glass display, and started losing his mind. Catching fish from the sky, and just standing with his head against the wall. I don't know if anyone has seen penguins in glass displays, but some of them do that! It's the creepiest thing, like they lost there mind or something. Then they go and put live action humans running around on cell phones, something I would normally consider blasphemy! But because it so unexpected I liked it. I also enjoyed the ending, they all danced for the humans and won there fish back :)

My roommate Jeremy made a pretty good comment describing the pacing of the film:

I think I speak for all kids born in the early 80's when I say, this is what made us men.

Here I am like 6 years old. Minding my own business searching for Waldo, one of my favorite past time experiences, and I discovered the answer to the question on every six year old's mind. What was that little nub underneath a womans bikini top? Waldo answers all. When I found this, I didn't even care about Waldo any more. The Wizard, the key, that little scroll... none of it mattered. Finding the one Waldo without a shoe on that page full of Waldo's was nothing next to this gem. I'm proud to share it with all of you. They were quick to pull this off the shelves but I think I still have copy at home somewhere. The new edition has her top painted on prolonging kid's quest across the world to reach manhood.
